The US HIV & AIDS Faith Coalition was formed in 2014, when several faith leaders decided to plan a pre-conference to the U.S. Conference on HIV & AIDS (USCHA). These faith leaders had been participating in the faith pre-conference to the International AIDS Conference, including the one in 2012 at Howard University in Washington, DC.
The USCHA Faith Pre-Conference included keynote addresses, panel discussions with persons living with and affected by HIV, sessions on disparities and social determinants related to health, and disparities in sexuality education. Participants engage in the discussions, participate in the development of strategies, and network with colleagues working in and with faith communities.
In addition to the faith pre-conference, the US HIV & AIDS Faith Coalition is part of the coalition the develops resources and plans observances for the National Faith HIV & AIDS Awareness Day, organizes webinars to combat stigma and discrimination, as well as other topics, and has organized interfaith worship services to observe World AIDS Day. The Coalition sends an occasional email with featured articles by a diversity of faith leaders on the role of faith in the many and various facets of HIV response.
Ultimately, the U.S. HIV & AIDS Faith Coalition has work to serve populations living with, at risk for, or personally affected by HIV. Our programs center the voices and experiences of people living with HIV as we work to inform, educate, empower, and inspire faith leaders and communities to strengthen their engagement in HIV response. Through our projects and programs, we have disseminated science-based, medically accurate information concerning the state of the HIV epidemic and provided information on best practices to increase HIV testing, linkage to care and support, and dismantle stigma and discrimination.
