Faith to End HIV Criminalization in the South is the keynote presentation for the 2024 United States Conference on HIV/AIDS (USCHA) Interfaith Pre-Conference, Moving Faith Forward in the South to End the Epidemic. The keynote is given by Dr. Robert Suttle, a native of Louisiana. Dr. Suttle is a recognized HIV racial justice leader who for over ten years has engaged in the struggle to decriminalize HIV in the U.S. criminal justice system. He works to cultivate relationships with other cross-movement leaders, collectively advocating for meaningful involvement of communities most impacted, centering Black communities and communities of color, connecting advocacy to decriminalize HIV to other movements around prisons, policing, and criminalization. He is a person living with HIV whose life has been altered by a grossly unjust HIV prosecution and conviction.
The session concludes with remarks by the Rev. Michael Schuenemeyer, CEO/Founder of Expansive Dignity, LLC, and a Sending Prayer by the Rev. Dr. Bentley deBardelaben, Minister and Team Leader – Education for Faithful Action (EFA) & Transitional Executive Local Church Unit for the National Ministries of the United Church of Christ.

A Gilead Sciences-funded project, the Faith Center advances the capacity and organizational resiliency of faith communities to address HIV/AIDS in the US South. Through transformative storytelling, informative educational offerings, strategic grantmaking, and broad dissemination, they partner with faith organizations to shift narratives away from stigma toward life-enhancing possibilities. The aim is to collaborate with Christian and interfaith partners to deepen their understanding of and engagement with their communities’ health challenges and opportunities.

The HIV Biomedical Update was presented as part of the 2024 U.S. Conference on HIV/AIDS (USCHA) Interfaith Pre-Conference, Moving Faith Forward in the South to End the Epidemic. The session was presented by Dr. Louis Shakelford, Director of External Relations at the HIV Vaccines Trials Network (HVTN), and also featured Dr. Ulysses Burley, III who leads the HVTN Faith Initiative. It focused on advances in the search for an HIV vaccine and other biomedical HIV prevention advances.

Faith and Identity: Navigating Transgender Experiences in the South, is a panel session of the 2024 Interfaith of Pre-Conference of the United States Conference on HIV/AIDS (USCHA) under the theme, Moving Faith Forward in the South to End the Epidemic. The session features an engaging and inspiring discussion exploring the intersections of two profound aspects of life, faith and identity experienced by people of trans and nonbinary experience. In the South, where religious and cultural experiences run deep, navigating these experiences as trans nonbinary people can be very complex. In these complexities, we find our strength, resilience, and community.

An engaging documentary film people of faith living with HIV address the challenges inherent in responding to the HIV epidemic in the Southern U.S. as people and communities of faith. The stories are shared in the film offer hope that through transformative conversations, together we can begin to eliminate the stigma often associated with discussing HIV, sex, and sexuality, in the context of faith.
